动态系统论视角下跨洋互动写作课程学生英语作文的复杂度、准确度和流利度研究

摘要:

本实证研究基于"跨洋互动在线英语写作"课程,以动态系统论为指导,考察中国学生英语作文的语言特征。受试为选修该课程的8名中国学生,运用了Wolfe-Quintero et al.(1998)所总结的方法考察学生作文语言的复杂度、准确度和流利度。总体测试结果表明学生作文写作流利度和复杂度普遍提高,但准确度却普遍下降。每个学生作文的语言复杂度、准确度和流利度的发展趋势呈现不同的特点。学生作文的成绩以流利度和准确度的贡献权重最大。在跨洋互动教学过程中,我们应该积极引导学生调整对语言准确度的关注,达到语言复杂度、准确度和流利度的均衡发展。

Abstract:

This paper reports findings from an empirical study of the emergence of complexity, fluency and accuracy of Chinese students’ English writing in a Cross-Pacific online writing course from the perspective of dynamic systems theory. The data were the written production of eight Chinese students from the course that lasted 15 weeks. They were analyzed by adopting the measures as used in Wolfe-Quintero et al. (1998) to answer the following three questions: (1) What are the general linguistic features of Chinese students’ written production as shown in the complexity, accuracy and fluency of students’ written texts? (2) What are the individual student’s performances in their writing as measured by complexity, accuracy and fluency? (3) What are the factors that affect students’ writing performance? Using measures for gauging student progress on the dimensions of complexity, accuracy, and fluency in the written work that the students produced before, during, and after taking the course, it was found that the students wrote more fluently, but less accurately, and their writing became more complex in grammar and vocabulary. Individual variability was clearly shown in the results. Some individual performances regressed or progressed, and others kept unchanged over time. Fluency and accuracy contributed significantly to students’ writing performance. It is suggested that students pay more attention to linguistic accuracy in the Cross-Pacific online English writing course to balance the complexity, accuracy and fluency in their writing.
